MovieDecode’s 2016 Oscars Predictions

It’s Oscars month! It’s the time where millions of viewers around the world tune in and see how the Academy have judged the wonderful work that 2016 had to offer. Will La La Land break all sorts of records? Will there be a surprise on the horizon? Well, without further ado, I present to you my winning predictions for some of the categories in this year’s Academy Awards!

BEST PICTURE:

And the nominees are…

  • Arrival
  • Fences
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • Hell or High Water
  • Hidden Figures
  • La La Land
  • Lion
  • Manchester By The Sea
  • Moonlight

MovieDecode’s winner: Moonlight
The Academy’s winner: Moonlight

As much as I’d love Hell or High Water or Arrival to run away with this one, I think it’ll be the mesmerising Moonlight winning this year’s Best Picture award, although La La Land will be hot on its heels.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE:

And the nominees are…

  • Casey Affleck, for Manchester By The Sea
  • Ryan Gosling, for La La Land
  • Andrew Garfield, for Hacksaw Ridge
  • Denzel Washington, Fences
  • Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic

MovieDecode’s winner: Casey Affleck
The Academy’s winner: Casey Affleck

By far the most emotion-evoking performance this past year goes to Casey Affleck, whose handling of humour, empathy and heartache is something to behold. The only way I can see this award going elsewhere is if the Academy has become swayed by the unfortunate accusations that have arisen over Affleck’s behaviour in recent months.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE:

And the nominees are…

  • Isabelle Huppert, for Elle
  • Ruth Negga, for Loving
  • Emma Stone, for La La Land
  • Natalie Portman, for Jackie
  • Meryl Streep, for Florence Foster Jenkins

MovieDecode’s winner: Emma Stone
The Academy’s winner: Emma Stone

Stone’s remarkable performance in La La Land has undoubtedly become the best of her career, but I think it could go any way this year, with the rest of the nominees also providing strong performances. This is by no means a stable prediction.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:

And the nominees are…

  • Dev Patel, for Lion
  • Lucas Hedges, for Manchester By The Sea
  • Michael Shannon, for Nocturnal Animals
  • Jeff Bridges, for Hell or High Water
  • Mahershala Ali, for Moonlight

MovieDecode’s winner: Lucas Hedges
The Academy’s winner: Mahershala Ali

Who would have thought that the sleazy kid from Moonrise Kingdom would have been in contention for such a prestigious award? But there’s no doubt that he deserves it. His performance alongside Casey Affleck in Manchester By The Sea showcased his immense potential as a dramatic actor, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:

And the nominees are…

  • Viola Davis, for Fences
  • Naomie Harris, for Moonlight
  • Nicole Kidman, for Lion
  • Michelle Williams, for Manchester By The Sea
  • Octavia Spencer, for Hidden Figures

MovieDecode’s winner: Viola Davis
The Academy’s winner: Viola Davis

I share the opinion with many that if Michelle Williams had a little more screen-time in the heart-wrenching Manchester By The Sea that she would be the bookie’s favourites for this award, but Viola Davis’ sublime role in Fences is going to win this one, for me.

DIRECTING:

And the nominees are…

  • Denis Villeneuve, for Arrival
  • Mel Gibson, for Hacksaw Ridge
  • Damien Chazelle, for La La Land
  • Kenneth Lonergan, for Manchester By The Sea
  • Barry Jenkins, for Moonlight

MovieDecode’s winner: Damien Chazelle
The Academy’s winner: Damien Chazelle

I predict a two-horse-race for this award, with Chazelle just crossing the finishing line before Barry Jenkins for his involvement in Moonlight. I would love for Villeneuve to get the award, though.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

And the nominees are…

  • Taylor Sheridan, Hell or High Water
  • Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester By The Sea
  • Yorgos Lanthimos; Efthymis Filippou, The Lobster
  • Damien Chazelle, La La Land
  • Mike Mills, 20th Century Women

MovieDecode’s winner: Taylor Sheridan
The Academy’s winner: Kenneth Lonergan

It’s a strong category this year, and as much as I love The Lobster for being recognised, for me the award HAS to go to Sheridan’s flawless script for Hell or High Water. I’d also be delighted for Kenneth Lonergan, too, there’s no doubt that he also deserves it.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

And the nominees are…

  • Eric Heisserer, Arrival
  • August Wilson, Fences
  • Allison Schroeder; Theodore Melfi, Hidden Figures
  • Luke Davies, Lion
  • Barry Jenkins, Moonlight

MovieDecode’s winner: Eric Heisserer
The Academy’s winner: Barry Jenkins

Adapted from Ted Chiang’s novel Story of Your Life, Heisserer’s wonderfully formatted script is something to admire, and helped bring such a spectacular and thought-provoking story to the big screen.
